Established
on February 25, 2004, the Guangdong Airport Management
Corporation (GAMC) is a large-scale State-run
enterprise of air transport service directly under
the administration of the Guangdong Provincial
Government. It groups four airports — Guangzhou
Baiyun, Shantou, Zhanjiang, and Meixian — among
which the first three are approved by the central
government as Category One airports opening to
the outside world. At present, the four airports
have set up business relations with 27 airlines
and operated more than 110 routes to over 100
cities at home and abroad, and are able to serve
with nearly 30 types of aircraft. The GAMC attached
great importance to safety production in 2004
and increased the traffic volume by leaps and
bounds. There were 201,563 aircraft movements
recorded in 2004 with a passenger turnover of
21.6 million and a cargo turnover of 648,800 tons,
which saw a year-on-year growth of 27.9%, 34.3%
and 16.1% respectively. Year 2004 became the first
Safety Year since the establishment of the GAMC.
On August 2, 2004, a grand ceremony was held
at the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport
to commemorate its relocation and completion.
Zhang Dejiang, Member of the Standing Committee
of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee
and Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Party
Committee, and Yang Yuanyuan, Minister of the
CAAC, were present at the ceremony. The relocation
project of Baiyun Airport was one of the key projects
in the Tenth Five-Year Plan of the State and the
biggest one-time-investment infrastructure in
the history of Chinese civil aviation. It is the
first airport designed and constructed in the
light of hub concept, which cost 19.8 billion
yuan and took 46 months to build.

On August 4, 2004, Baiyun Airport succeeded
in the seamless safe relocation, becoming the
first domestic airport with a successful relocation
of the largest scale. The old Baiyun Airport had
gloriously completed its historic mission after
73 years of operation. Since its launch, the new
Baiyun Airport has been running safely and steadily,
with its facilities in good operation, business
in robust development, and passenger turnover
exceeding the 20-million landmark.
The second phase construction of the new airport
has kicked off recently and Baiyun Airport will
become a more sophisticated air hub with this
further expansion.
In the light of the localization reform, the
GAMC will, based on the Pan Pearl River Delta
cooperation, build Guangzhou Baiyun International
Airport into a comprehensive hub in the Asia-Pacific
area connecting America, Europe and Oceania, and
radiating Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
It has an ambition to increase its passenger turnover
to the world’s top 20. The GAMC will further develop
branch air routes on the platform of Shantou,
Zhanjiang and Meixian airports and build up a
network that integrates hub, regional and branch
air routes pivoting on Guangzhou Baiyun International
Airport. This will expand and strengthen the airport
industry in Guangdong Province and greatly contribute
to the economic development in this region.
