CAN’s annual passenger throughput broke through 65 million! Over 200 destinations around the world can be reached as you like!

On December 26th, CAN held a celebration to "witness the annual passenger throughput broke through 65 million". At 13:57, the "lucky" flight CZ 3112 from Beijing landed at No. 140 stand. The crew and over 200 passengers enjoyed this historical moment.

 

        It was the great event in the development of CAN, symbolized that CAN had become the travelling platform with the capacity of 60 million passengers globally, even become another milestone to construct the world-class aviation hub. It was significant, realistic and far-reaching for further promoting the construction of the world-class airport groups in Pearl River Delta, and forming the "5+4" airports pattern in Guangdong Province.

 

        The representatives of CAAC Central and Southern Regional Administration, CAAC Inspection and Management Bureau of Guangdong, Guangzhou Aerotropolis Development District, China Southern Airline, Airport Public Security Bureau, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Corporation (GBIAC), and China Immigration Inspection, China Customs, China Inspection and Quarantine at the airport all attended this simple but solemn ceremony. CAN gave the scarves as souvenirs to all passengers on the flight, and sent them away by the "special" shuttle bus- with the painting of "CAN's annual passenger throughput broke through 65 million".

Become the highlight of "Making Guangdong Strong in Civil Aviation" and "Three-Hub Strategy of Guangzhou"

       In 2017, the passenger throughput of CAN has exceeded 65 million, reaching over 65.8 million at the end of year. It not only became the third airport with over 60 million annual passenger throughput after PEK and PVG in domestic, but also became the greatest "single" terminal with such great amount of passengers in the world. The breakthrough symbolized CAN's new achievement in constructing the world-class aviation hub, and officially joined the global airport club with the capacity of 60 million passengers, being one of the busiest airports in Asia or even around the world.

        At this proud moment, the President of GBIA, Mr. Jiachen Qiu said, "under the leadership of CAAC, Party Committee and Government of Guangzhou and Guangdong, and the Guangdong Airport Authority (GAA), with the joint efforts of airlines, inspection units and onsite units, CAN has broke through 65 million annual passenger throughput, as a milestone in the civil aviation development."

       The 65 million annual passenger throughput is our new "identity" around the world, even the new "motivation" for moving ahead among global airports. We not only focused on increasing the throughput, but also have the great responsibility to join the global competition with higher quality and efficiency, and fulfill the goal of make China and Guangdong strong in aviation. We will keep on following the world-class standards and having the goal of "5+4" airport strategy of Guangdong province, to support the Guangdong economy."

       As for building the Guangzhou international aviation hub, there is a great opportunity and the advantages of national orientation, marketing direction, and urban location. The official documents like "State Council's Several Opinions on Accelerating the development of Civil Aviation Industry", "Vision and Action of Belt and Road Initiatives", "Outline of the 13th Five-Year Plan" and "Opinions on Deepening Reform in Civil Aviation", have already clearly stated to build the Guangzhou international aviation hub.

         The government of Guangzhou also focused on building the international aviation hub in Guangzhou. It has been contained in the "Three Hubs Strategy". And the importance of fulfilling the CAN's aviation hub function and building the complex traffic network, has been highlighted in the documents of "Opinion on Accelerating the Development and Construction of Guangzhou Airport Economic Zone", and "Three years Action Plan on Promoting the Construction of Guangzhou International Aviation Hub and Airport Economic Demonstration Zone (2017-2019)".

       The municipal government has a great expectation on CAN's construction of international aviation hub: CAN should follow the standard of "First-Class Service, First-Class Facilities" to strengthen the construction and management and boost capacity, with new objective and breakthrough of passenger, cargo and mail throughput, and international flight routes.

       Guangzhou, as the central city in Pearl River Delta, the merchanapolis with thousands of years, and the origin of ancient Maritime Silk Road, being the transfer of South China and the world, has been in the position as one of the major three aviation hubs, which brought new opportunity for CAN's internationalization.

        Since August 4, 2004, CAN has had four breakthroughs of annual passenger throughput. The passenger throughput surpassed 20 million after the year of airport's transition in 2004. And it kept on "10 million growth every 3 years" in the following years, like surpassed 30 million in 2007, surpassed 40 million in 2010, surpassed 50 million in 2013. Since this year, CAN has a significant growth. From Jan. to Dec., the increase of average passenger throughput was up to 10.1%, being in the first place among domestic airports, achieving the breakthrough of 65 million annual passenger throughput.

Over 200 destinations around the world can be reached as you like!

        In the past years, CAN was dedicated to building the world-class aviation hub, cooperating with three major global airline alliances and all relevant airlines, promoting flight routes, attracting more global flight routes, increasing transfer opportunity, and supporting the development of the base airline, "China Southern Airline (CZ)" , the biggest airline in Asia. Recently, CAN becomes the first gateway to reach Southeast Asia and Australia. And the flight routes network has been mapping, mainly formed by the areas in Asia Pacific, Oceania and Africa, and gradually covering the European and United States areas.

       So far, there were nearly 80 airlines operating in CAN, including nearly 50 foreign airlines, over 80 destinations globally. Flying from Guangzhou to the main cities in Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia only take 4 hours, which was called "4 hours Aviation Circle". And the main cities around the world can be reached within 12 hours.

        The business growth of CAN keeps well this year. With the capacity release at high-peak hour, self inspection services, international passenger process transformation, and the successful promotion of international flight routes, CAN has shown its complex operational ability and developing potential in aviation market.

        At the end of December in 2017, 23 international regional routes and 10 destinations were newly developed in central and southern region of China, including the Mexico city, the first international destination in Central America. CAN also cooperated with CZ to promote the development of "Canton Road". At present, 6 destinations like Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, 2 destinations like Auckland, Christchurch could be reached by flight in Guangzhou. The weekly flight volume was over 80, providing various choices for direct or transfer passengers.

        In recent years, with the great supports of state, provincial and municipal governments, CAN also achieved many preferential policies and inspection conveniences like the 24 Hours Transit without Immigration Inspection, 72 Hours Visa-Free Transit, Tax Refund for Departure of Overseas Tourists, and Fast Customs Clearance of Cross-Border Cargo. Starting from March 1, 2017, all passengers travelling by CZ' s international flights was no longer need to claim their checked baggage and pass through China Customs while transfer in Guangzhou. All baggage could be checked directly through to the passenger's final destination.

        It was convenient for the international passengers to do the registration of departure and transfer (at CAN) at the departure station by one time, then claim the baggage at the destination station. In 2017, the international and regional passenger throughput of CAN was 15.87 million, increasing by 17.4%, possessing over 24% of total passenger throughput.

        The representative said, the breakthrough of 65 million meant CAN entering the new period of second enhancement. With the opportunity of the "Thirteenth Five-year Plan", CAN will take efforts to promote and attract more high-quality routes to European and America. The following 3 years, CAN plans to increase over 10 international routes, up to 190 international routes in 2020. Besides, with the opportunities of T2 operation and World Route Development Conference held in Guangzhou in 2018, CAN will further improve the global influence and routes radiation.

Enhancing Passenger Travelling Experience with Smart Service

        At present, the "Time Space Tunnel" and "Haitian Corridor" on B1 floor, which were firstly created at CAN among domestic airports, have become the "first station" of Guangzhou for passengers all around the world. The research and design of service robots and automatic shuttle bus, the self-service applications of check-in, boarding, security check by QR code, have brought more and more convenience for passengers. And the new Flight Delayed Passenger Service Area, Relaxed Chair Area, Male and Female Characteristic Security Channels also provide unique services for passengers. What's more, the cultural interactive activities held every two months provide continuous surprises for passengers.

        Since last year, CAN has strengthen the construction of "Smart Airport". The new launched online "Airport Pass", which was through searching and focusing the official account of "Baiyun Airport" on Wechat, lots of travelling services like "Flight Information", "Check-in Online", "Airport Facilities", "Terminal Direction" could be "provided" in your phone. Later, the AR Direction of Terminal, Super Voice Translation, Smart Customer Service will be launched.

        As for the safety operation and flight regularity, CAN has created the Panoramic Visual Monitoring System, A-CDM 3.0 System, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Defense System, and FOD projects etc. Most of them have been on the leading position among domestic airports. Among which, the A-CDM has fulfilled the functions of operational controlling, dispatching and coordinating in short time, so as to enhance the flight regularity management. Since last half year, the flight regularity rate of CAN has occupied the advanced level among over 20 domestic airports.

        Now the service quality of CAN is steadily improving. In 2017, CAN was awarded as one of the top 10 "Excellent Airports in 2016 China Airport Service Quality Assessment". In the third quarter of 2017, CAN reached sixth place in the global ASQ.

        Later, CAN will focus on the application of smart technology in airport service, frequent passengers project etc. Then, with the opportunity of the T2's opening in 2018, CAN will update the airport facilities and service, dedicate to providing the excellent travelling experience for passengers.

        The Terminal 2 will put into operation in 2018. CAN will speed up the third expansion project, including the construction of E4, W4 bridges, Terminal 3 building, and the 4th and 5th runways. The flight routes network system of airspace and the ground complex traffic network system will be fulfilled consistently, and the function of international aviation hub will be strengthened. After the completion of third expansion project, there will be 3 terminal buildings, 5 runways at CAN, possessing over 100 million passenger throughput annually, which will better support the city group development of Guangdong- Hong Kong- Macau Greater Bay Area, greatly boost the Guangdong economic growth and the aviation economic growth.
